Waxed Canvas Bag Care: Cleaning, Re-Waxing and How the Patina Develops

Waxed canvas is made to be used. Over time it creases, softens and develops a patina, which is why no two bags look the same. Here is how to look after a bag like the Hayes Waxed Canvas Weekender.
Everyday cleaning
- Brush off dry dirt with a soft brush.
- Wipe marks with a cloth and cold water only.
- Do not use soap or detergent; it strips the wax.
- Never machine wash or dry-clean.
Drying
If it gets wet, let it air-dry at room temperature, away from radiators.
Re-waxing
When areas look pale or stop beading water (often after a year or so of regular use), rub in a fabric wax bar, warm gently with a hair dryer so it soaks in, and let it cure overnight. Keep wax off the brown trim and hardware.
The leather-look trim
Wipe the contrast handles and tabs with a damp cloth and let them dry naturally.
Storage
Store empty in a cool, dry place, lightly stuffed with paper to hold its shape. Avoid sealed plastic.
About creases and patina
Light creases and slightly darker areas where you hold the bag are normal and part of the look.
